The European Commission has deployed an EU Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) for the parliamentary elections, scheduled to take place on 25 January 2006, following an invitation from the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Palestine. The Mission is led by Chief Observer Ms. Véronique De Keyser from Belgium, Member of the European Parliament. In total, the EU EOM deployed over 185 observers from 23 EU Member States as well as Norway, Switzerland and Romania. The observers were deployed throughout the West Bank and Gaza to assess the whole electoral process in the light of international principles or genuine democratic elections.

 

EU EOM conduct a comprehensive, independent, factual, an impartial observation of the pre-election, election day and post-election phasis. They present publically to the country authorities a Preliminary Statement after the initial announcent of results and a final comprehensive report at the termination of the electoral process. Often the largest international observation mission, EU EOM are made off a comprehensive team of observers and supporting staff and entail a Core Team (CT), Long Term Observers (LTO) and Short Term Observers(STO) deployed all over the country, including in remote areas.

The EU EOM is independent from the European Commission Delegation to the palestinian authority and EU member states. The mission is neutral and independent in its findings.
